Lanthanodrax speleotraxis.1 (Also the occasionally occuring "sport" or hypotrophic subspecies, L. speleotraxis ignigastris.)

The fireworm is possibly a candidate for the single North American species which has had its evolution most seriously interfered with by wizardry. The original species -- just another small reptile, to start with, a member of the suborder Lacertilla and a distant relative of the geckos -- was repeatedly mutated by the wizards caught up in the events surrounding the final fate of Afallon&euml;. The most comprehensive change to their structure happened as a side effect of the great aphthonic intervention, the wizardry intended to save as much as possible of the unique Atlantean flora and fauna from the impending destruction of the First Continent. The rafting wizardry which was meant to simply transport a number of species to the newer continents went wrong during the final crisis in many important ways, and rampant wizardry leakage contaminated and disrupted the genetic structures of many of the creatures involved. The fireworm, already susceptible to such disruption because of previous genetic manipulation, suffered far more of it during the transport to the early versions of North America and Europe than any other creature involved in the ancient rafting project.

In Europe and Asia, the fireworm had fewer natural enemies, and grew and changed in ways which would otherwise have been impossible. Further mutations due to the accumulation of wizardly overlays in the more populated parts of Europe led to the rise of the offshoot species Draco, the "true dragons" which became famous in Europe's medieval period for being killed by knights. (It should be made clear that most of these casualties were members of the species Draco ectenis, the "lindworm" or wingless dragon, an omnivore by habit and cave-dweller by preference. Even the most heavily armored knights had a terrible batting average against Draco draco Europaeis, the cliff-dwelling, strictly carnivorous winged dragon, which regarded knights merely as something with a crunchy outside and a yummy inside.)

But in North America, where many "rafted" species with wizardly components survived for the next few millenia after the fall of Atlantis, the fireworm kept for some time its original Atlantean form -- that of a small carnivorous reptile with a tendency to burp flammable gas as a defense mechanism when frightened or upset. (No dragon, true or false, breathes fire: but even the smallest ones can ignite it on exhalation in one of a number of ways, usually involving chemical or enzymatic reactions.) However, unfortunately for the fireworm, its main Atlantean natural enemy the " king-weasel" (Macrogulo gulo, long since devolved into Gulo gulo, the wolverine) succeeded in establishing itself in North America as it had not been able to do in Europe because of the presence of the great crested cockatrice (Cerastus baseliensis) or northern cockatrice (Cerastus scotodasos). The king-weasel nearly succeeded in exterminating the fireworm: only the smallest members of the family survived by changing their normal above-ground habit for an underground lifestyle into which the king weasels would not follow them.

After some millennia spent living and rebuilding their gene pools in the natural caves of the East, the fireworms moved into the manufactured caves and underground spaces of the great East Coast and Midwest cities. (No fireworm species live west of the Rockies: possibly due to uncomfortable memories secondary to the fall of Afallon&euml;, they will not stay in earthquake-active zones.) Regardless of what ConEd tells you, fireworms are the proximate cause of the steam New Yorkers see coming up from under the streets in all weathers -- the more steam, the larger the fireworm. They are some of the most exothermic of all Earth-based life forms, when well-fed, and the very biggest ones can prosper down in the tunnels in even the coldest weather. When exposed to further wizardry leakage, as sometimes happens in the neighborhood of worldgate complexes, the oldest and most experienced fireworms can over time acquire some telepathic and empathic abilities.2 This enables them to force the smaller fireworms, and even members of some other species, to do their will -- shepherding food into their ambit, or otherwise serving their needs. For this reason, smart wizards stay out of places where the older and larger fireworms can be found, unless the needs of errantry drive them there.

Fireworms are also the ultimate source of all the stories about "dragons in the sewers." There is a certain ironic humor to this, as wizards know there wouldn't be nearly so many stories if the things in the sewers were only dragons.

(See also: Eldest, the: Twelve, Song of the.) (SYWTBAW)

1The taxonomy of the western European fireworm is somewhat confused. The Bestiarium Ignotum classified the fireworm as Lanthanotrops micrognotus, but this did not take into account the internal differences between the Lanthanotrops and Lanthanodrax families -- possibly understandable, since Linnaeus was unable to find a dead specimen to dissect, and trapping a live one was at that point out of the question. The Acta Parabiologicas revised classification group places the fireworm among the various members of family Hemerothalcus, with the "true dragons" of the Lanthanodrax and Draco species.

2 Because of the already-fragile state of their DNA, such exposure over prolonged periods can also result in memory loss and other neurological problems, as seems to have been the case with the Eldest in SYWTBAW.

Perytons are built by the Lone Power, and manifest in shapes which the beings they pursue will find frightening and evocative of their purpose: for humans, this often means wolves, though other shapes are possible depending on what cultural context is native to the beings they are pursuing. (This alteration of appearance is an automatic response and not to be confused with shapechange, which is an active function of wizardry.) The Lone Power builds the physical shells of the perytons and then lures into them the degraded or deranged souls of human beings after death—souls either in a state of rage or denial about their own deaths, or so deeply drowned in the "unfinished business" of some hate-based event or situation of their previous lives that they actively refuse to move on to what awaits them. Other useful victims—perhaps the ones the Lone Power most prefers to catch—are those souls of the enraged dead who formerly felt most alive when they were killing or causing pain to others. Whatever the case, these souls act as "power source" for the Lone One's constructed shells. The human eyes that seem to look out of the perytons' animal bodies are the clearest token of their presence and willing servitude. In return for being granted this grim post-mortal existence, the perytons willingly serve the Lone One as hunters, trackers, and instruments of torture; packs of them are especially effective against still-living humans. A human's scent enrages perytons beyond anything else, and they will immediately kill any human they catch.

Since they are no longer associated with a genuinely living body, and (because in the service of a Power which so hates life and the living) cut off from Life itself, the span of perytons is by no means as long as the Power which decoys the activating souls into them would like those souls to think. A peryton may persist for a matter of centuries before the soul within it becomes sufficiently vitiated to cease to exist. There have apparently been a very few cases of a soul within a peryton escaping its prison: these have always been souls which were merely deranged rather than degraded, and which came to their senses and departed the shells that held them. However, the Lone Power is usually skilled at selecting souls which are too hate-filled ever to exercise this option, and prefer their eventual fatal dissolution to any hope of escape into a more merciful but also more uncertain and uncontrollable universe. (Though the Wizard's Manual states categorically that no soul which desires to escape prison will ever be denied its desire, however long its liberation may take, the statement has an unhappy corollary: no soul that wholly desires its imprisonment can be rescued from outside.) Normally, after the extinction of the soul inside a given peryton-shell, the Lone One merely sets the shell out on the "open market" and waits for another soul sufficiently hate-filled not to care what happens to it or how much longer it'll last, as long as it (initially) looks like eternity.
(1) The soul is still a soul, but its continued humanity is in something of a qualified state under the conditions by which a soul becomes part of a peryton. </div>

(Note: Carmela's unusual middle name "Emeda" is an acronym made up of the initials of the first names of three of her aunts and two of her uncles. AWOM)

Timeline issues yet to be resolved make it unclear exactly how much older than Kit Carmela is (see the discussion area for this page): Carmela is at least two years older than Kit, but possibly more.

Nothing much is seen of Carmela in the canon until TWD, where she first appears lying around in her bedroom, watching anime (in the original Japanese). This is the first indication of an aptitude for languages which becomes more marked as the series goes on, and becomes a serious cause of personal annoyance to Kit, and general astonishment to everyone else.

It must be assumed that Carmela found out that her brother was a wizard during (or shortly after) the events of DW, at which point Kit needed to reveal the fact to his parents. Whatever the exact timing of the revelation, Carmela's attitude to Kit's wizardry seems from the start to have been more accepting and casual than that of their elder sister Helena, who thought it likely that Kit had done some kind of deal with the Devil. Conversations reported in TWD make it plain that Carmela finds the concept of wizardry at least untroubling, if not actually cool. Her quick acquisition of a basic vocabulary in the Speech suggests that the latter is more likely.

Carmela is reported to have been rather late in acquiring any particular concern about clothes -- apparently overalls were about all she was interested in until her late teens -- but has made up for much lost time with the discovery of the alien shopping channels which have become available on the Rodriguez family entertainment center since Kit started using wizardry to tinker with the TV's, cable's, and DVD's settings. Much of her spare time in the later books seems to be taken up with channelsurfing for bargains of various kinds. Some of these have been alien cultural artifacts: some of these, to her parents' considerable concern, have been weaponry. She has used this kind of "bargain" to good effect on occasion, especially during the events of WAW.

It would be easy for someone unfamiliar with her growing list of exploits to dismiss Carmela as a fluffhead mostly interested in clothes and boys -- as, from Kit's point of view, an endless parade of the latter seem to be trying to get Carmela's attention (and she's apparently not above letting them think one or another of them are getting it, at a rate of one per week or so). But her continuing interest in the far-out, fun, and freaky conceals a rock-solid loyalty to and protectiveness of her little brother, who she sometimes seems to think is getting in over his head, and needs taking care of. This attitude frequently drives Kit to distraction, as do her unpredictable attitudes toward his fellow wizards -- alternately affectionate (in the cases of Filif and Sker'ret), faintly scornful (as in the case of Prince Roshaun), or predatory (as regards Ronan). But from all indications, this situation seems scheduled to go on as it's been going, or possibly to get even worse, as Carmela becomes more fluent in the Speech, the world of errantry, and the fine art of driving her little brother nuts. (TWD et seq.)
Such devices, when running in Manual mode, routinely display the Apple Without a Bite. WizPods may be assumed to be part of the same digital wizardry initiative that Tom Swale alludes to in HW.

In everyday use WizPods mimic the look-and-feel of the unmodified devices and support all their usual functions. However, since each WizPod also contains an inbuilt "stand-alone" temporospatial claudication, the devices are able to unfold to many times their apparent external size to display data, and are especially useful for working with spell diagrams which are better rendered in 3D format. Data storage is also managed through the claudication via intuitive on-demand streaming swap-in / swap-out to a closed-continuum "hotvoid" space, theoretically implying near-infinite storage for a WizPod's total contents. Onboard storage is handled by an Alterf Technology-sourced SentientManagement quark-trap lattice solid rated at 120 yottabytes (though theoretically capable of much more if you ask it nicely).

Wizardly implementations of the iPod began appearing simultaneously with the the debut of the so-called 4G models. There is speculation as to why rollout was delayed this long, but the consensus seems to be that the Powers that Be were waiting for the hardware to become sufficiently widespread that it no longer provoked much comment. Since then a regular progression of new WizPods have appeared in tandem with their less wizardly cousins, but none with quite the ballyhoo of the new 6G WizPod, or WizPod Touch, which appears above / to the left. This model introduced the new touch interface as well as numerous new software features.

(The full implementation of the companion WizPhone device was delayed for some while due to problems with the international service providers on Earth, but these difficulties have now been resolved, and the new device is in general distribution.)

WizPods as a class remained in performance beta for several years after their introduction; interested wizards had to specifically request the Manual-to-WizPod outgrade from their local Advisory wizard and were required to participate in device error-checking and debugging until the modality was declared out of beta by the team of wizards handling planetary modality management for the Powers. That milestone was passed in February 2008, at which time WizPods went into general circulation both as elective modalities and "release modalities" for new / probationary wizards.

WizPods behave like other Manual implementations in that they are self-upgrading and self-augmenting, transparently adding new apps and online / upline features in the same manner as "print" and other hard-format Manuals do. Physical-model differences are upgraded on an elective basis: wizards who're hooked on clickwheels do not have to suffer for their preference, as all WizPods share the same feature set regardless of appearance (including their ability to handle third-party apps). The feature set is completely backwardly compatible with all current WizPod models whether or not their "street versions" include visible display; even the WizShuffle has room via its inbuilt claudication for the SentientManagement lattice solid, and can be spellhacked or otherwise modded to produce display and other functions in accordance with the wizard-user's preference.

Darryl McAllister turns up on the Moon with a WizPod during the crisis meeting in WAW, causing Dairine to go into a state of serious hardware envy. (The description of Darryl's model suggests that he was then using one of the 4G implementations, though sometime between then and AWOM he appears to have gone for the upgrade to a wizPhone.)

An ad for the newest model WizPod, detailing some of its more attractive features, can be seen here. (WAW, AWOM, et al.)

“So rattled was she that though she stared right at the person who was steadying her, it took her precious seconds to see him. He was built slight and strong, wearing a white shirt and sweater and a long fawn-colored jacket; a fair-haired young man with quick bright eyes and an intelligent face.” Dairine is very surprised to discover that he’s English-speaking.

There has been considerable speculation about this person’s identity. If the description is correct, he might look something like the man in the image to the right. He is described as being “telepathically sensitive”. But beyond this, the man is not further described in the HW text except as “just one more of the billions of hominids moving about the worlds.” However, his quick and resourceful response to Dairine’s problem suggests that he was a person with considerable experience in dealing with situations like being chased around by heavily armed aliens.

After the scene this man stages to help Dairine escape – thoroughly trashing one of the Crossings’ many bars to slow down the pursuing Satrachi – he apparently spends some hours in the custody of Crossings security before being released. HW

[ Darryl McAllister turns up on the Moon with a WizPod during the crisis meeting in WAW, causing Dairine to go into a state of serious hardware envy. (The description of Darryl's model suggests that he was then using one of the 4G implementations, though sometime between then and AWOM he appears to have gone for the upgrade to a wizPhone.)
Transits through Penn, however, are likely to become more problematic over the next few years despite the long-anticipated relocation of all Penn's Amtrak rail services from the cramped quarters beneath Madison Square Garden / the Felt Forum into a new space at the Moynihan Train Hall in the beautiful old Beaux-Arts building that housed the Farley Post Officeon 8th Avenue. This work is mentioned briefly in OHMWS/TVTQ and also in WH, and the actual moving of the gates is described in the first chapter of TBM.
If the current NY state plans for the reconstruction of the Madison Square Garden-adjacent Penn Station space go forward, this will probably cause much more disruption to worldgating schedules.
(Archaeocerastus sp.) A genus of wizardly fauna formerly only associated with Europe and Asia, but now also present on other continents.

Ancient and medieval peoples living in the range of the original cockatrice species were sufficiently confused about the origins of the beast that they concocted some truly bizarre stories to account for its genesis. The most popular of these, common all over Europe, was that the cockatrice hatched from a rooster's egg which had been incubated under a toad. One ancient chronicler gives this fairly detailed account:

<blockquote>"For they say that when a Cocke groweth old, he layeth a certaine egge without any shell, instead whereof it is covered with a very thicke skinne, which is able to withstand the greatest force of an easie blow or fall. They saye, moreover, that this egge is layd onely in the Summer time, about the beginning of the Dogge-dayes (between early July and early September), being not so long as a Hens Egge, but round and orbiculer:...sometimes of a yellowish muddy color... and afterward sat upon by a Snake or Toad, bringeth forth the Cockatrice, being halfe a foot in length, the hinder part like a snake, the former part like a Cocke, because of a treble comb on his forehead." (1)</blockquote>

This image of the creature is one that persists to this day in Europe, and can be seen in various coats of arms there, particularly in achievements of the arms of the city of Basel, in Switzerland. The environs of the canton of Basel-Land, close to the Black Forest and the area where present-day Switzerland, Germany and France meet, were anciently famous for being infested by cockatrices; and a pun on Basel's name is partly responsible for the other name by which the cockatrice is sometimes known in non-wizardly popular culture: the basilisk. However, in wizardly usage, the two creatures are nothing to do with one another; the cockatrice is a mutated reptilian, and the basilisk is a completely artificial construct routinely closely associated with the Lone Power.

The cockatrice is actually yet another survivor-genus of the aphthonic intervention or "rafting project" designed to save as many as possible of the indigenous wizardly life-forms of the continent of Atlantis. Not all the rafted Archaeocerastus species prospered in their new homes: most of the "westbound" species died out in North America, due to either climatic problems or conflict with local indigenous species, and had to be "replanted" later. In Europe and Asia, though, the genus had better success. Its two main species, the great crested cockatrice and northern cockatrice, are still established there -- though like many more natural species, their normal habitats are being threatened by the increasing presence of human beings in what was formerly wild or little-frequented country.

The cockatrice's most notable characteristic (all right, besides seeming to be half chicken and half snake...) is the ability to produce an effect usually referred to as broadcast neurotoxism. Small creatures on which a cockatrice fixes its gaze and attention are paralyzed: not with fear (though that would be understandable) but because the cockatrice can interfere directly with neurotransmission and other functions of the animal nervous system. This is probably another reason for the ongoing confusion with the basilisk, one variety of which (the stellate or "starry" basilisk) is able to induce tissue changes in living creatures that start out with paralysis, but emphatically don't end that way. As a result, in the popular mind both the cockatrice and the basilisk are routinely endowed with the ability to "turn things into stone", but the causes of the apparent effect are very different.
</div>

During the events of AWAB, Nita meets Ronan in a fried chicken place on Main Street in Bray, and is more or less immediately attracted to him, struck (initially) by his dark good looks and his edgy, slightly punk attitude toward life in general and her in particular. When she discovers -- having made her way to his address, needing a consultation on local wizardly conditions -- that the shaggy-haired, dark-eyed, intriguing presence a few tables down at the chicken place is a fellow wizard, she's initially shocked... but she gets over it.

The attraction Nita initially feels is if anything made stronger by her discovery that Ronan is a wizard of considerable talent and power -- one strong enough to have survived the dangerous Ordeal-experience of the elemental exploit known as taking in the Sea. The difference in their ages -- he has at least a couple of years on her -- does not particularly bother her: what does bother her is that she realizes how attractive she finds this opinionated, annoying, annoyed, abrasive guy. The realization leads to some moments of discomfort for both of them. Some of these are comical, such as the incident during the wizards' crisis meeting in the Long Hall pub in Dublin, during which Nita (as the Senior Wizard for Europe puts it) inadvertently "turns Ronan into a soggy beermat." The tension between them -- and the appreciation that each has for the other's talent -- probably makes the long "first kiss" they eventually share more or less unavoidable.

What Nita and Ronan discover from this kiss, however, is far more important than any mere realization about personal emotional development (or the lack of it). During the moment of intimacy, Nita detects, buried deep inside of Ronan, the unmistakable signature of one of the Powers that Be. Ronan, it turns out, has been at least since his Ordeal, and possibly much longer, a hiding place for this Power, which has been biding Its time, waiting for mortal events to move into a specific configuration... one that's now drawing close.

Ronan's opinions about this are initially unprintable, and become complex -- possibly understandably so for someone on the threshold of adult life who suddenly finds that his life is not his own, and that he is a weapon in the One's hand, no different from the terrible Spear of Light with which he shortly finds himself invested (though a case could be made for the opinion that the situation was actually the other way around). Nita's reactions to Ronan's evolving predicament are similarly complex. Her longstanding relationship with Kit has suddenly had a factor added to it that neither of them expected, and one that Nita finds profoundly uncomfortable -- since the three of them will need to be working together professionally in the short term, handling the incursion of Balor and the supernatural forces of ancient Ireland into the present day. Fortunately the situation does not resolve itself as tragically as it might have if that three-way tension was not operating; Nita's and Kit's presence prove vital to the effective use of the Spear Luin on the field of the Second Battle of Moytura, and Ronan departs the field still in possession of the Spear and his sanity...though certain other tensions, particularly between him and the Power guesting at the bottom of his soul, are not entirely resolved. Neither are other more personal ones, though these are at least not actively toxic.

After AWAB Ronan remains mostly in the background until WAW, when Kit calls him in to assist with the events starting to unfold surrounding the beginning of the crisis caused by the Pullulus and the dark force driving it. While he makes light of the tensions between him, Nita and Kit, those tensions are still there, though in diminished form due to everyone's preoccupation with the growing danger and the imminent loss of wizardry among adults. Ronan becomes an important part of the expedition to Rashah: and not even he fully realizes (until events there begin to unfold) exactly how important he, his inner guest, and the Spear they both wield will be to the final outcome, especially the rise of the Hesper. He gives Nita at least one terrible moment during this period, which Nita later threatens to take out of his hide: but so far this promise remains unfulfilled.

In AWOM, Ronan is one of the group of wizards who turn out to meet Mamvish on her arrival on Earth. He later is called in again by Kit (along with Darryl McAllister) to assist in investigating events surrounding the discovery of the superegg on Mars...with very mixed results.

Ronan's personal life continues rather complicated. Issues regarding his interior "houseguest" seem largely to have been resolved. But, possibly secondary to his increased presence in and around the Rodriguez household, he has succeeded in attracting the attention of Kit's sister Carmela -- never an entirely safe situation, and one which has caused Nita to stand back and watch with clinical interest (and an occasional urge to sell tickets). How this will develop, possibly not even the Powers that Be can predict with any certainty. (AWAB, WAW, et seq.)
The Oath begins, "I swear by the One to perform what I promise, fully and without any reservation, nor with any mechanism or execution founded in the intention to deceive; to fully inform the wizards to whom I swear this oath of all manner and matter of things pertaining to their querying and desire; to carry out this information at a speed and in a way best suited to these wizards' desires and the achievement of their ends; and at the end of said achievement, to depart without doing any harm to them or any thing or person affiliated to them in whatever degree, and when the conditions of this swearing are discharged and acknowledged to have been discharged, to go peaceably again into my own place. And all this, by the Power of that One in Which all oaths and all intentions rest, inviting It on my abbroachment of this Oath to withdraw the gifts It allows me to enjoy, I swear -- " There are several more optional phrases setting out any additional conditions and requirements, the fulfillment of which will signal the oath's completion and the release of the being doing the swearing.

A wizard will only be able to use the Binding Oath once in a lifetime. In WH, Nita judges that the right moment has come, and forces Esemeli to take the Binding Oath...with mixed results that serve only to emphasize how dangerous the Lone One is to deal with even when the wizard thinks he or she holds all the cards. Additionally, the Oath is as binding on the administering wizard as it is on the being who takes it. So powerful a stricture routinely demands a high price; the power of the binding (determined by the power of the being which is bound) implies a directly proportional payment in energy by the wizard. Such payments can take years to clear. (WH)

One of the most commonly used physical wizardly tools, especially for wizards in the earlier stages of their careers.

A wand normally is used in one of two ways: as a tool with its own specific properties and powers, or as a channeling device used to direct the forces of a spell in a specific manner or direction.

In the first instance, a wand usually shares some of the properties of a charm, in that it has a specific small wizardry associated with the physical fabric of the wand itself. This wizardry may be something independently applied, or a property already associated with the physical object (such as a rowan wand's affinity for moonlight). In the first instance, the wizard intending to use the wand will normally try to construct it from some material which has little affinity with any specific wizardry. This ensures that there will be as little interference with the channeling of the wizard's personal energy as possible.

The wand is one of the more personal objects associated with wizardly practice. Wands are normally made from requested or donated material -- as Nita's rowan wands are all donations from the rowan tree Liused, and Kit's antenna-wand was a present to him from the Edsel his father has been detailing. Since a given wand is usually made or prepared by the wizard who will be using it, it's viewed as inappropriate (if not simply unwise) to sell, trade or transfer them. There are rare exceptions to this rule involving legacy (in the word's original sense) or "heritage" wands that either possess significant historical value, or have been involved in wizardries that have imbued them with qualities requiring special management or curation, usually by Advisory-level wizards or above.

As their practice progresses, there are wizards who become ambivalent about wands. They may start to see them as a "crutch", a shortcut device, or a gimmick -- something slightly juvenile and embarrassing, associated with the early days when, as most wizards do, they had more sheer power than expertise. But such opinions are probably not particularly helpful. Like other skilled craftsmen for whom the work is what matters most, the smartest and most gifted wizards have no compunction about using a wand when it's obviously the right tool for the job.
