Range of the northern cockatrice

Cockatrice species native to the Black Forest area of southern Germany, especially the area immediately south and southwest of Freiburg im Breisgau.


This species prefers heavily wooded habitats, where it preys on small forest animals (squirrels, rabbits, pine martens, etc). Individuals will sometimes gather together into small loosely-connected colonies or "hunting cooperatives", and will lair together in the limestone caves and caverns of the area.
