Hempstead, Town of

One of the three towns or "civil townships" in Nassau County.

Like the other two towns, the Town of Hempstead (called this to distinguish it from the Hempstead village which is included in it) is rather like a mini-county inside Nassau. It is made up of twenty-two villages and thirty-two "hamlets". A number of these, such as Baldwin, Freeport, and Point Lookout, appear in various books in the series. (SYWTBAW et seq.)
