Ambrose Light Station

(Located at 40°27'00" N 73°48'00": call sign Station ALSN6) The light station which replaced the venerable lightship of the same name in 1967. The original tower was struck by a tanker in 1996: it was demolished by the US Army Corps of Engineers later that year and replaced with a new tower. The description in the present edition of DW is of the older tower.

Ambrose Light Station marks the spot where several main shipping lanes in Lower New York Bay converge: it is therefore an impostant navigational aid for ships in the Port of New York and New Jersey. Whales in the area also use it as a marker and reference point (and indeed the National Data Buoy Center] notes the presence of at least the right whales in the neighborhood). The dit-dah, dit-dah Morse horn call of the hooter on the Light Station's tower is a well-known note in those waters.
