Line 1: Line 1:
The branch of wizardry devoted to understanding and maintaining the Earth as a going concern.1 Geomancy includes and contains not only spells and intervention techniques directly affecting the element of earth (in both its general and specific usages) but the art and business of managing the planetary environment to best effect, and offsetting the (often) world-threatening effects of the species that live on a planet -- in other words, keeping the living and the lived-on in the best possible relationship for all of them. A wizard whose primary specialty is geomancy is referred to as a geomancer.

Planetary-level wizards are almost always geomancers, though there have been exceptions, such as the great hydromage Angelina Pellegrino. (Also, on Earth, the Planetary wizards have historically mostly been female, the female/male ratio being something like 85%/15%. This may have something to do with the normal distribution of the specialty, however, as about 70% of geomancers, or wizards who describe themselves as such, are female.) (AWOM)

1When speaking of the management of other planets, the fragment prepended to the "-mancer" suffix naturally changes: in our solar system, for example, the equivalents would be "venerimancer", "areomancer", etc. Normally in the Speech the compound is formed by using the Speech-name for the planet and the "-mancer" equivalent, to specifying that the world-wizardry in question applies to a specific planet. The term used to refer to the branch of wizardry in general is amareinweyë.)
