Once the largest commercial office building in the world, the Pan Am Building was completed in 1963. It rose over the main Grand Central Terminal building, and had a heliport facility on top from which helicopter service from Manhattan to the three major New York area airports was offered. This service was terminated in 1977 after a helicopter accident at the top of the building. Also closed at this point was the Copter Club, a dining and meeting venue just underneath the heliport level.

After the failure of Pan American Airways, the building was sold to the Metropolitan Life insurance company, and now bears its logo. (SYWTBAW)
