Simurgh

In ancient Persian mythology, a wise, immense and powerful birdlike creature, large enough to carry off an elephant in its claws (and therefore sometimes confused with the Roc). The Simurgh is variously said to be either immortal, or (possibly due to some confusion with the Phoenix) to have a lifespan of 1700 years, after which it plunges itself into a great fire, is immolated, and reborn.

For wizards based in Earth's Solar System, "Simurgh" is the name for an exhalatory creature associated with the Sun, and with the rise and fall of life and sentience in the System. This creature's continued presence in Sol System is a matter of conjecture, as there have been no direct contacts or even sightings for many thousands of millennia. (AWOM)
