While in AWAB this castle is described as being located somewhere in Wicklow, the genuine castle which inspired it is located near Rathkeale in County Limerick.

The original castle was built by the Earls of Desmond in the 1400's. Apparently at one point Sir Walter Raleigh lived there, and tradition suggests that, somewhere on the Matrix lands, that strange new vegetable the potato was first cultivated.

During the late 1700's and early 1800's the castle began to fall into disrepair, and was used (among other things) as a linen manufactory and a flour mill. It was renovated in the late 1800s, but by the 1930's it was once again a ruin, except for the shell of the original keep.

It was around then that Shaun O'Driscoll found the castle, bought it, restored it, and stocked it with a truly astonishing library and many medieval-period (and later) historical artifacts.

After "Johnny" died, his wife and son took over the management of the castle. (AWAB)
