Liused in its autumn foliage

The rowan tree that grows in Nita's back yard. It says that "Liused" is its name in the Speech, which leaves a reader well versed in the classics wondering whether the Celtic word for the rowan tree, luis, is a Speech-borrowing.

Nothing is said in the canon about who planted Liused: if it was Nita's father, he must have done so at least ten years before her birth, as the tree is described as very well grown by the time Nita first speaks to it as a probationary wizard in SYWTBAW.

Their first long conversation is memorable for a thoughtful discussion of the Battle of the Trees by a member of the species most closely involved. At Nita's request, Liused donates her a branch of its living wood for use in a rowan wand. Nita is a little concerned at the time about whether the tree will be willing to make such a donation, but it turns out that Liused feels affectionate toward her: when she was younger, she was always climbing around in this tree, and her father hung a swing for her from one of its lower branches.

The relationship apparently continues a warm one, as at the beginning of TWD, Liused asks Nita if she needs a replacement for the most recently acquired wand: during AWAL she is using yet another one. (SYWTBAW et al.)
