The male side of the Dunbar family is of largely Scottish extraction, mostly lowlands Scots rather than highland, and numerous relatives of Betty's paternal grandfather are scattered around Edinburgh and around Toronto in Canada. Betty's father, Ronald Dalgleish Dunbar, was born in Canada and later settled in the US. However, Betty's mother, Angela Nikonidas, was of mixed Greek / Swedish origin. Neither is mentioned in the series to date.
Other Dunbars who are mentioned include Nita's Uncle Joel and Uncle Jerry, her mother's younger and older brothers.
