In normal, "real-world" usage, the cars manufactured by the Checker Motors Company in the early and middle 20th century, specifically for use as taxicabs. They were famous and much loved for their durability, handling ability, long service lives, roominess, and comfort, and for the huge capacity of their trunks. The company was unable to compete with the big car makers who began to enter the taxicab market in the 1960's, and produced its last cab in 1982. It is now part of General Motors, and produces mostly body parts. However, the Checker cab remains a legend among New Yorkers, and the few cabbies who privately own and maintain Checkers are in high demand.

In the Lone Power's dark alternate Manhattan, Checkers have become corrupted into bloodthirsty, pack-hunting predators -- sometimes called "vampire cabs" -- that gladly do the Lone One's bidding, and are happy to pursue Template:NitaAndKit and try to kill them. The leader of the cab pack, referred to as the "king cab", fights one-on-one with the Lotus Turbo Esprit that arrives and tries to save Kit. (SYWTBAW)
