(Also "MTA") The New York State-run authority which owns and administers (among other facilities) the New York subway system and the Long Island Rail Road. Chartered in 1965, it originally was responsible only for regulating commuter railroads like the LIRR and Metro-North, but later grew to become responsible for all public transport in the state.
