In normal, "real-world" usage, the cars manufactured by the Checker Auto Company in the middle of the 20th centur, specifically for use as taxicabs. They were famous for their durability, handling ability, long service lives, roominess, and comfort, and for the huge capacity of their trunks.
In the Lone Power's dark alternate Manhattan, Checkers have become corrupted into bloodthirsty, pack-hunting predators that gladly do the Lone One's bidding, and are happy to pursue Nita&Kit and try to kill them. The leader of the cab pack, referred to as the "king cab", fights one-on-one with the Lotus Turbo Esprit that arrives and tries to save Kit. (SYWTBAW)
