A weapon first forged on Earth in the depths of time by the Powers that Be, and reforged in recent times. (AWAB) The Spear was originally associated with the Michael Power or Winged Defender, but later turned to other uses. (WAW) In Irish myth it was associated with the ancient Spear called Luin, also called the Spear of Lugh and the Spear of Victory. The Spear of Light was forged to be a primary vessel of one of the Cardinal Virtues, and as such should itself probably be considered sentient.

There are several tales of the original Forging of the Spear, with some overlap of details: and (as is usual when mythology begins to involve the Powers that Be) they are probably all more or less true. In AWAB, Doris Smyth tells Nita that the Spear was one of the Four Great Treasures of the People of Dana of the ancient world, originally created by the Smith of Falias and brought to Earth from the Four Cities of (A, B, C & D). (These may have been the names of other planes of existence: the details here are sketchy). In order to win the battle for Ireland with the Lone Power in Its Balor avatar, the Power known as Lugh the All-Crafted took the Treasures and -- in company with Govan, one of the Making Powers -- "reforged" the Treasures, ensouling them and investing them with profound and terrible power associated with the four physical elements.
