A weapon first forged on Earth in the depths of time by the Powers that Be, and reforged in recent times. (AWAB)

The Spear was originally associated with the Michael Power or Winged Defender, but later turned to other uses. (WAW) In Irish myth it was associated with the ancient Spear called Luin, also called the Spear of Lugh and the Spear of Victory. The Spear of Light was forged to be a primary vessel of one of the Cardinal Virtues, and as such should itself be considered at the very least sentient.

There are several tales of the original Forging of the Spear, with some overlap of details: and (as is usual when mythology begins to involve the Powers that Be) they are probably all more or less true. In AWAB, Doris Smyth tells Nita that the Spear was one of the Four Great Treasures of the People of Dana of the ancient world, originally created by the Smith of Falias and brought to Earth from one of the Four Cities of Falias, Finias, Gorias and Murias.

(These may have been the names of other planes of existence: the details here are sketchy).

In order to win the battle for Ireland with the Lone Power in Its Balor avatar, the Power known as Lugh the All-Crafted took the Treasures and -- in company with Govan, one of the Making Powers -- "reforged" the Treasures, ensouling them and investing them with profound and terrible power associated with the four physical elements. The Spear became the vessel both of the element of Fire and the caritas Virtue, and was directly responsible for the defeat of Balor: the other three Treasures served only to hold off Ireland's destruction until the Spear, in the hands of Lugh, could act.

In later millennia the original Spear passed out of existence, and had to be reforged to deal with the renewed threat of the returned Balor during the events of AWAB. Biddy O Dalaigh was instrumental in the reforging, as was Dairine in obtaining the ur-matter necessary for the physical structure of the Spear. Once this matter was obtained -- in the form of starsteel from the heart of a newly ignited star born shortly after the Big Bang -- the remade and re-ensouled Spear was given into the care of the very unwilling Ronan Nolan, who at the time had recently been revealed to be hosting an avatar of the Michael Power (with whom the Spear was routinely associated). The spear was used by Ronan in the Second Battle of Moytura: there it proved itself a terrible and effective weapon which would roar across the battlefield in a frightening blast of fire at the sight of its enemy, and return when called to the hand that had released it. Ronan retained the Spear for some time after the events of AWAB and the return of Template:NitaAndKit to their homes in the US.

In WAW, Ronan appears on Nita's doorstep in answer to a summons from Kit, and joins the intervention team who are going out in search of the Instrumentality. In the course of the ensuing search and the struggle against the Pullulus, the Spear changes hands once more, leaving Ronan's possession and passing -- apparently as it was intended to do from the time of its very first forging -- to the Hesper.

The Spear's present whereabouts (at least as regards any position in the merely physical universe) are unknown. (AWAB, WAW)
