Ke Nelaid, Roshaun
(The fullest known version of his name: Roshaun ke Nelaid am Seriv am Teliuyve am Meseph am Veliz am Teriaunst am det Nuiiliat / det Wellakhit. Other sequences are omitted in the canon; the formal version of the name ends with the phrase am me'stardet Wellakhir, "Guarantor of Wellakh."1) Heir to the Lordship of the Sun of the planet Wellakh, Roshaun is one of the three wizards who come to live in Nita's and Dairine's basement during the events of WH and WAW.
Roshaun is the only child of Nelaid ke Seriv, Sunlord of Wellakh at the beginning of WH, and his lady, Miril am Miril dev ir Nuiiliat. Both parents are descendants of a line of wizards who came to specialize in the management and control of Wellakh's very problematic marginally variable star, Thahit, and who in the distant past had sacrificed many of their own lives to save the planet from destruction when that star flared up. As a result, the descendants of this line are treated as royalty by Wellakh's people, and live in amazing splendor and luxury. But this treatment by their people has considerable ambivalence at its root, so that the Wellakhit "royal family" -- especially those royals who are also wizards -- must be constantly on its guard against the machinations of various political entities that are trying to control their actions by various means...including assassination.
Growing up in this uneasy atmosphere is possibly one of the reasons why Roshaun seems to Dairine, on his arrival, to be so unbearably self-centered and stuck up. Her perception of him is probably not helped by the fact that he is tall and (by both his standards and hers) extremely good-looking -- and knows it. With his very long fair hair, emerald-green eyes and chiseled features, Roshaun strongly resembles your average anime prince. (His take on this, though, would be that they strongly resemble him.) His general attitude seems to be that everybody around him owes him automatic deference...an attitude which Dairine immediately sets out to correct, with varying levels of success.
Roshaun eventually manages to redeem himself somewhat in Dairine's eyes. He becomes instrumental in a wizardry which calms down Earth's sun, which during WH nearly throws a flare which could have proven as devastating as the one which slagged down one side of Wellakh. During this crisis their friendship becomes, if not a settled thing, at least something that both of them are willing to acknowledge exists. But early indications suggest that it is never going to be as simple or straightforward a friendship as Nita's and Kit's. (WH, WAW)
1 Limited translations are given in WH of some of this omitted material. One excerpt is rendered as "son of the Sun Lord, beloved of the Sun Lord, son of the Great King, descendant of the Inheritors of the Great Land, the Throne-destined". From all this, Dairine comes to the annoyed conclusion that the title "Prince" probably does suit Roshaun best.
